Experience fast-growing, dynamic and modern India as part of a pioneering fellowship in Bengaluru. A city of contrasts where rapid development has left 35% of the population still living in slums. This Fellowship is an opportunity to take a trailblazing role and learn from the inspiring work our partner has already started.
We will support the existing work of Mantra 4 Change, an inspirational NGO set up by Teach for India alumni. We will support their STEP project (School Transformation and Empowerment Project) and work to directly improve the quality of education within the government school system. We will do this by co-designing training workshops with Mantra and providing intensive school support.
Mantra4Change is an Indian NGO dedicated to transforming education in Bangalore. Aiming to work with 92 schools and nearly 39,000 students in the next 5 years, Mantra takes a systematic approach in supporting schools to build a strong and conducive culture that promotes effective teaching and learning processes.
You will fly into Bangalore and spend the first few days settling into your new home, exploring the city and sampling the culinary delights. You will receive briefings and training from our partner and visit schools to understand the education context. The team will then have time to plan the training and school support programmes.
Working in school clusters you will run workshops for groups of teachers in our partner schools and support schools to identify their unique challenges. During the week you will observe and coach teachers in schools, alongside school leaders and our partner. You will also support teachers to create plans that will ensure their professional development continues after you leave.
Your final week in school will be largely spent supporting your teachers to apply new knowledge and practice classroom strategies introduced the previous week. On your final day in school you will present your teachers with certificates, ensuring you leave all teachers with clear development goals to focus on. To conclude the trip, the team will travel to Goa to celebrate their achievements.
Fellows worked really hard to build positive relationships with in-country teachers with considerable success. The quality of these relationships had a big impact on the feedback and support they were able to offer. Many of the teachers spoke about the lasting impact working with the fellows will have on their continuing professional development but also the personal impact it had had on their lives.
I found it immensely valuable personally. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have this kind of cultural stimulus doing the same job in a different context. The GDST partnership with Mantra gives confidence that you’re working as part of their larger programme for improvement and genuinely contributing to the development of the schools.
I had a lot of teaching and middle management experience before the Fellowship. However, the biggest impact of this Fellowship for me has been more personal than professional; it has made me more reflective about educational issues in limited resource contexts.
It was great to get back to the basics of teaching with minimal resources. I realised that despite cultural differences the relationship between teacher and student is essentially the same. I have made some wonderful friends during the journey.
By working in close partnership with locally-led teacher development organisations and by taking a data-driven approach to our work, we are able to track teacher development to evaluate the impact of our training and continually improve our course.
A professional and cultural exchange between teachers working in very different contexts, brought together by a passion for education.
Build meaningful relationships with like-minded teachers, open to learn and share their experiences, and grow through a unique shared experience.
An opportunity to learn from inspiring people, share new experiences, and create lifelong memories.
