Supporting government teachers in Luang Prabang

You will work directly with the teacher training colleges in Vientiane province and Luang Prabang. The focus will be on planning and providing training that supports the government’s goals, including a focus on 21st-century learning and English proficiency.

Government Primary and secondary schools

We are supporting a mixture of primary/elementary and secondary/high schools in two regions. Class sizes average 31 children and resources are in short supply with most schools limited to just exercise books and a small number of textbooks.

Quality teaching and universal literacy are Ministry priorities

Primary education is compulsory and free until the fifth grade but less than one-third of children complete all five years of primary education and even fewer graduate to secondary school. Recently, there have been rapid improvements in educational standards moving closer to the Ministry's goal of universal literacy.

Working with the Ministry of Education and the British Embassy

During this Fellowship you will partner with the Ministry for Education in Laos and the British Embassy. You will be exposed to, and contribute toward, the heart of the country’s educational system and its ambitious targets for the future.

Ban Keun and Luang Prabang

During the first part of the Fellowship, you will be based in Ban Keun, a small mining town set amongst the stunning countryside. The second part of the Fellowship takes place in the rural town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by lush forests and countryside.

You might be wondering

Where do we stay?

In Ban Keun, you will stay in a quiet guesthouse next to the river. There are beautiful open spaces for planning, relaxing and getting close to nature. In Luang Prabang, you will stay in a guesthouse near the centre of this vibrant town. All rooms are shared with another team member.

How do we get around?

All in-country transport is included. We travel by private transport throughout the Fellowship, usually by minibus. In both Ban Keun and Luang Prabang, the accommodation is centrally located and is no more than a 30-minute walk to the Teacher Training Colleges, though private transportation is also provided.

What's the food like?

All meals are included and you’ll enjoy a range of Laotian and Southeast Asian cuisine which includes Laab (fragrant pork mince or fish) with sticky rice, grilled fish, papaya salad, stews, pho, and more.

What's nearby to see & do?

Ban Keun is a great place to walk between paddy fields or to hang out at the local karaoke bar. The area around the town also has much to offer with stunning countryside, lush forests, waterfalls, and wildlife. In Luang Prabang, the impressive surrounding temple complexes are easily walkable.

What's the weather like?

Wet in most parts of Laos with high humidity, but the landscapes are emerald green. The average temperatures you’ll experience in summer range between 25°C/77°F and 32°C/90°F.

What else should I know?

Laos is a relaxed, communist country, and is relatively lower in tourist numbers compared to its neighbors, thanks to being landlocked.
